2014 Brazil

"I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth."Quote from 2014, who said it?

  • Decided by FIFA Exco in Zürich, 30th October 2007. Following from a 2003 Exco decision that 2014 would be held in South America. Brazil had a unanimous backing to be the hosts.
  • Entries deadline, 15th March 2011.
  • Qualifications drawn in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 30th July 2011.
  • European play-offs drawn Zürich 21 October 2013.
  • 203 teams entered preliminary competition out of 207 eligible (excl. hosts Brazil). 201 teams actually played 820 matches (2,350 goals) - after the late withdrawals of the Bahamas (Aug 2011) and Mauritius (Oct 2011). Bhutan, Brunei, Guam and Mauritania did not enter. The new South Sudan joined FIFA too late to enter. 32 teams in Finals.
  • Finals drawn at Costa do Sauipe in Bahia on 6 December 2013.
  • Almost the same format, with 32 teams in eight groups of four, top two of each group qualify for knockout stage. Qualification decided by (in order): Points, goal difference, number of goals scored, if level outcome of encounter between the two sides, goal difference between teams concerned, number of goals scored in the group between teams concerned, finally drawing of lots by FIFA organising committee (slightly different from 2006).
  • Squad numbers 1-23 are shown in [square brackets] and precede the player's names; (s) means "seeded".
  • Yellow card amnesty after the Quarter Final stage.
  • New to this WC is the introduction of goal-line technology (GLT) - at last. FIFA will use the German Goal/Control-4D GmbH system. Using high speed cameras mounted around the stadium to track the flight of the ball. Hawk-Eye was introduced into the Premier League 2013-14 season.
A lovely simple idea is the introduction of the vanishing foam spray used by referees to mark the position of the ball and the wall at a free-kick. It will be adopted for all the major leagues next season.
  • Participating Teams in Qualification order: Brazil (11-4 *) (Host Nation); Japan (44-47); Australia (57-59); Iran (49-37); South Korea (56-55); Netherlands (8-15); Italy (9-9); Costa Rica (31-34); United States (13-14); Argentina (3-7); Belgium (5-12); Switzerland (7-8); Germany (2-2); Colombia (4-5); Russia (19-18); Bosnia & Herzegovinia (16-25); England (10-11); Spain (1-1); Chile (12-13); Ecuador (22-28); Honduras (34-30); Nigeria (33-44); Ivory Coast (17-21); Cameroon (59-50); Ghana (23-38); Algeria (32-25); Greece (15-10); Croatia (18-20); Portugal (14-3); France (21-16); Mexico (24-19); and Uruguay (6-6). Game 1 [M1]: Played Thursday 12 June 2014 (17.00) Arena Corinthians, São Paulo. [773]
note: All kick off times are local Brasilia official time (UTC-3 add 4 hours for BST); except Manaus (UTC-4 = plus 5 hours for BST).

BRAZIL 3, CROATIA 1 (1:1)
0:1 Marcelo o.g. 11, 1:1 Neymar 29, 2:1 Neymar pen 71, 3:1 Oscar.
Note: Match preceded by opening ceremony. Ω Denotes FIFA Man of the Match.

BRZ (4-2-3-1): [12] Júlio César Soares de Espíndola; - [2] Daniel Alves da Silva, [3] Thiago Emiliano da Silva (c), [4] David Luiz Moreira Marinho, [6] Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior ; - [8] Paulinho - José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior (63 [18] Anderson Hernanes de Carvalho Viana Lima), [17] Luiz Gustavo Dias; - [11] Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior, [10] Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior Ω (88 [16] Ramires Santos do Nascimento), [7] Hulk - Givanildo Vieira de Souza (68 [20] Bernard Anício Caldeira Duarte); - [9] Fred. - Frederico Chaves Guedes.

CRO (4-4-2): [1] Stipe Pletikosa; - [11] Darijo Srna (c), [5] Vedran Ćorluka, [6] Dejan Lovren, [2] Šime Vrsaljko; - [4] Ivan Perišić, [7] Ivan Rakitić, [10] Luka Modrić (sporting a new look short back and sides haircut, his usual mop has gone), [18] Ivica Olić; - [9] Nikica Jelavić (78 [16] Ante Rebić], [20] Mateo Kovačić (61 [14] Marcelo Brozović debut).

YC: Neymar 27 for blatant elbow on Modrić, should have been red; Ćorluka 65 who hacked down Neymar with a late challenge, Lovren 69 for touching the arm of Fred who dramatically dived backwards, the only thing he did all game - he only had four touches of the ball in the first half; Luiz Gustavo 87 for a cynical foul on Modrić with both feet, one after the other.
My man of the match was Oscar who had one of his best games, Croatia were unlucky with a dreadful goalkeeper - he went down like an old grannie for both goals and should have saved the penalty - I thought he had at first having guessed the correct way to go for a nervous easy height shot. And a bent referee, an experienced FIFA official who would not speak English to the Croatians. I know we always see home bias but his display should be his last. Rakitić was clearly fouled in the run up to the gaol by Oscar. They also had a good goal disallowed on 86' after Júlio César flapped at a deep cross and Ivica Olić cleanly headed it back into play for to smash home for Fabio Cannavaro said half-joking on ITV 'It is a FIFA rule that if you touch a goalkeeper in the six yard area - it is a foul'. All brazil and Neymar will be relieved.
All subs available except Mario Mandzukic for CRO who is suspended for this game.

Cameroon’s disastrous World Cup campaign was all but summed up in one episode: after conceding their fourth goal against Croatia, Left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto was seen engaging with his team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo before proceeding to headbutt him in the face. The full-back later described his actions as arising from frustration after Moukandjo refused to pass the full-back the ball.
"I could not accept his reaction. There was so much frustration in that match” said Assou-Ekotto. "Now people take me for an idiot. I could not control my temper.
The incident further marred a match in which Alex Song was sent-off after deliberately scraping his elbow down Mario Mandzukic.

The sad 'rat' is at it yet again. Having lost his patience in the 80th minute when the ball is away on the left of the box, the referee is watching play, he strides up to Chiellini and bites him on the left shoulder - as clear as day to the TV cameras. They both fall to the ground and for some reason Suárez cannot stop playing with his offending dentures, you would have thought it was the last part of him that people should be paying attention to - especially as he later alleged that he was poked in the eye. None on the BBC or ITV pundits stated the obvious reason why he did it. Simply, to get Chiellini to retaliate and get sent off. The match was still in the balance at 0-0 and 9 men in opposition is better for Uruguay than 10. He is a cheating rat and he will get what he deserves. Once he has served his ban I would advise his future football coaches to supply him with some pices of electric cable for him to gnaw away at in the dressing room during those quiet periods.

It was ridiculous not to send Suárez off,” Chiellini said. “It is clear-cut. Then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn’t have done.Suárez is a sneak and he gets away with it because Fifa want their stars to play in the World Cup. I’d love to see if they have the courage to use video evidence against him. The referee saw the bite mark, too, but he did nothing about it.”
Suárez denied he had bitten Chiellini. “These situations happen on the field,” he said - only when he is on it!.I had contact with his shoulder, chest against shoulder and I got a knock to the eye – nothing more.”

Suárez served a 10-game ban in the Premier League in 2013 for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, having committed the same offence playing for Ajax three years earlier. He will get a huge ban, Mauro Tassotti, the Italy defender, currently holds the record for the longest ban issued at a World Cup suspended for eight games in 1994 for breaking the nose of Spain midfielder Luis Enrique with an elbow. Two days after the match, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee banned Suárez for nine international matches, effective immediately, meaning he would take no further part in the World Cup. It was the longest such ban in World Cup history. He was also banned from taking part in any football-related activity (including entering any stadium) for four months and fined CHF100,000 (approx. £65,700 / €82,000 / $119,000)

Fantastic start for USA, Dempsey, who played most of the match with a broken nose, cut in from the left went around Boye and left footed it across the keeper off the far post - a gem. Poor Jody Altidore, who tore his left hamstring after 21 minutes to be stretchered out of the WC. The equaliser came in the second half after a nice backheel inside by Gyan to the onrushing André Ayew to hit it with the outside of his left foot inside the near post. The winner was a dream goal for young centre back John Brooks who came on for Besler having tweaked his hamstring. A corner from the right hand side taken by Zusi found him unmarked for a free header into the net. His reaction to having scored on his WC debut (and 5th cap) was a sight for sore tired eyes. Ghana come back strongly - they were the better team second half, but the yanks had the grit.

YC: Rabiu 30, jumped into Beckerman, Muntari 90+2 went through Dempsey in the centre circle.

Tournament Issues: Cameroon’s World Cup squad refused to board a plane due to take them to Brazil for the World Cup because of disputes over bonuses, according to French sports newspaper L’Equipe. The newspaper’s website claims that the squad have instead remained at their hotel in the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé, while reporters have camped outside the Cameroon Football Federation headquarters awaiting further information.
This is not the first time that financial concerns have affected the Indomitable Lions’s preparations for a World Cup. Disputes over bonus payments were reported in both 1994 and 2002 – the team failed to get out of their group in both tournaments. They have settled a dispute with the government and will receive 5.8m CFA francs (£7,200) more than the 50m CFA francs originally offered to each player for their participation in the tournament. They departed 12 hours later.

Tournament issues: As with the other african nations there is always a fall out over bonus payments that have not yet been paid. The day before their last match vs. Portugal the team had a bust up with the management and demanded they be paid in cash. Promting the Ghanain FA to issue a statement fron the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama, promising remuneration and incredibly, there are suggestions that a plane will fly in from Ghana to Brasília with $3m (£1.76m) on board. The players did however, promise not to boycot the match - as it would effect their appearance money {edit}.
It later came out that two players, Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng, were suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons.
The GFA issued a statement:
“The Ghana Football Association has suspended Sulley Ali Muntari indefinitely from the Black Stars with immediate effect.
The decision was taken in the wake of his unprovoked physical attack on an Executive Committee member of the GFA and a management member of the Black Stars, Mr Moses Armah on Tuesday 24 June, 2014 during a meeting. Muntari’s accreditation for the 2014 World Cup has been withdrawn with immediate effect”
.
Boateng, meanwhile, was also suspended indefinitely and also sent home for what the FA said were “vulgar verbal insults” aimed at the team’s coach, James Appiah, during training.

"The president of the republic asked me to tell you that Ivorians are proud of you, he is proud of you. Despite the loss, you were brave against Colombia. He also instructed me to inform you that the bonus match against Greece will be doubled."
A €35,800 incentive will not transform the lives of millionaires such as Drogba and Yaya Touré, though the Ivory Coast-based reserve goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo would certainly benefit.

Manchester United (ENG) and Bayern Munich (GER) have fourteen of their players in the various WC squads.

FIFA and money

FIFA forecasts it will spend $2 billion on staging the 2014 World Cup Finals. However, according to Forbes business magazine the World Cup in Brazil will generate $4 billion in total revenue for FIFA, or 66% more than the previous tournament in South Africa in 2010. The vast majority of the money will come from the sale of television and marketing rights. The World Cup generates more revenue for its association than any other sports tournament, save the Olympics.
Almost all of the revenue FIFA generates comes from television rights ($1.7 billion) and marketing rights ($1.35 billion) from corporate partners like Adidas, Emirates, Sony, Visa, Hyundai and Coca-Cola. FIFA’s profit for the Brazil World Cup: $2 billion or £1,180,000,000.

Prize money

The greatest expenditure by FIFA is on the payment of prize money. The total prize money on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA as £34.3 million (US$576m the exchang rate used at the time of the WC was £1 to US$1.68 or US$1 to £0.59p) (including payments of £41.7 million (US$70m) to domestic clubs), a 37 percent increase from the amount allocated in the 2010 tournament. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants will receive £893,500 (US$1.5 million) for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, the prize money will be distributed as follows:

  • £4.765 (US$8m) million – To each team eliminated at the group stage (16 teams).
  • £5.361 (US$9m) million – To each team eliminated in the second round of 16 (8 teams).
  • £8.339 (US$14m) million – To each team eliminated in the quarter-finals. (4 teams).
  • £11.914 (US$20m) million – Fourth placed team.
  • £13.106 (US$22m) million – Third placed team.
  • £14.893 (US$25m) million – Runner up.
  • £20.85m or US$35 million – for the Winners
