  • Entries deadline, th March 2015.
  • Qualifications drawn at Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna, St. Petersburg, Russia 25th July 2015.
  • The qualifying format for the FIFA-affiliated UEFA teams was confirmed by the UEFA Executive Committee meeting on 22–23 March 2015 in Vienna. European play-offs drawn on 25 July 2015, at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
  • For the first time all 211 FIFA member teams entered preliminary competition. Out of 210 eligible (excl. hosts Russia). 209 teams actually played 868 matches (2,454 goals) - Zimbabwe (suspended 12 March 2015) and Indonesia (suspended 30 May 2015) were disqualified. On 16 October 2015, the Kuwait FA was suspended by FIFA, after playng three of eight scheduled matches.
  • Finals drawn on 1 December 2017, at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow.
  • Almost the same format, with 32 teams in eight groups of four, top two of each group qualify for knockout stage. Gruop qualification decided by (in order): Points, goal difference, number of goals scored, if level outcome of encounter between the two sides, goal difference between teams concerned, number of goals scored in the group between teams concerned, new to 2018 fair play points, i.e. YC -1 point, 2YC -3 points, RC -5 points and finally drawing of lots by FIFA organising committee.
  • Squad numbers 1-23 are shown in [square brackets] and precede the player's names; (s) means "seeded".
  • Yellow card amnesty after the Quarter Final stage.
  • New to this WC is VAR (Video Assistant Referee) a team to support the decision making process on the game in play. VAR has four specific points to interact with during a game; when there is an incident involving i: Goals and offences leading up to a goal, ii: Penalty decisions and offences leading up to a penalty, iii: Direct red cards and iv: Cases of mistaken identity after a refereeing decision. VAR cannot make the final call on a decision as that lies with the ref. This is where the process can get confused for the crowd and TV watchers. At the 2018 WC, VAR will be used when the referee tells the VAR team to review an incident or when the VAR team tells the ref an incident or decision should be reviewed. The ref should signal this by drawing an imaginary box in the air. He can take the opinion of the VAR in his ear or review the footage himself via a momitor at the side of the pitch. The referee can also delay any restart at any time to chat to VAR. The signal for this by the referee is to hold a hand to their ear. There is, rather bafflingly, no time limit for the review process. Any decision given on the field will not be changed unless the video review shows that the decision was a clear and obvious error. Assistant referees have been told not to flag on tight offside calls, this will be done by VAR.The VAR team is based in Moscow's International Broadcast Centre and consists of the VAR and three 'assistant referees'. Already in this world cup VAR has shown it works....only when it doesn't.
Also new for 2018 apart from the usual allowance of 3 substitutes in 90 minutes of play, if a game goes to extra time in the knockout stages a fourth sub will be allowed.
  • Participating Teams in Qualification order: Russia (66*) (Host Nation); Brazil (2), Iran (36), Japan, Mexico (15), Belgium (3), South Kore (61), Saudi Arabia (67), Germany (1), England (13), Spain (8), Nigeria (47), Costa Rica (25), Poland (10), Egypt (46), Iceland (22), Serbia (35), Portugal (4), France (7), Uruguay (17), Argentina (5), Colombia (16), Panama (55), Senegal (28), Morocco (42), Tunisia (14), Switzerland (6), Croatia (18), Sweden (23), Denmark (12), Australia (40), Peru (11). 12' Sweden should have had a penalty a clear shove and foul after seeing the replay, confirmed my initial instinct.

90+2' The ball bounces and the winger Brandt, lets rip from 20 yards with his left foot, it flies past Olsen and clatters the right post. Playing like England!
90+5' Werner running hard past Durmaz, who brings him down on the edge of the area.

YC: Boateng 71' for tripping Forsberg, Boateng 82'. / Ekdal 52' pole-axed Müller, Larsson 90+7' dissent.
There was a Polish conpiracy here - or maybe something more sinister - why a clear penalty by Boateng on striker Marcus Berg after 12' wasn't given in the first place and then not reviewed, as all penalty decisions must be! “I have not watched it but the people on my team who have say this is a clear penalty,” Andersson said. After a very late winner Sweden manager Janne Andersson had this to say “Some of the group leaders of their team celebrated by running in our direction and rubbing it into our faces by making gestures and that really got me annoyed, We fight it out for 95 minutes and then you shake it out and leave so I was very angry. People behaved in ways that you do not do. This is probably the most crushing end to a game I’ve experienced.” also “You should leave your opponents to feel sad. You do not act in the way they did. We reacted very strongly.”

    FIFA and money

FIFA forecasts it will spend $2 billion on staging the 2014 World Cup Finals. However, according to Forbes business magazine the World Cup in Brazil will generate $4 billion in total revenue for FIFA, or 66% more than the previous tournament in South Africa in 2010. The vast majority of the money will come from the sale of television and marketing rights. The World Cup generates more revenue for its association than any other sports tournament, save the Olympics.
Almost all of the revenue FIFA generates comes from television rights ($1.7 billion) and marketing rights ($1.35 billion) from corporate partners like Adidas, Emirates, Sony, Visa, Hyundai and Coca-Cola. FIFA’s profit for the Brazil World Cup: $2 billion or £1,180,000,000.

    Prize money

The greatest expenditure by FIFA is on the payment of prize money. The total prize money pool on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA - Nov 2017 - as £591.668 million (US$791m the exchang rate used at the time of the announcement was £1 to US$1.333 or US$1 to £0.748p) This figure includes payments of £156.332 million (US$209m) to domestic clubs and the remaining $134 (£100.232) million will be insurance fee for clubs who players get injured during world cup, a 40 percent increase from the amount allocated in the 2014 tournament. Before the tournament, each of the 32 entrants will receive £1,122m (US$1.5 million) for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, the prize money of $400m (£299.2) will be distributed as follows:

    • £5.984 (US$8m) million – To each team eliminated at the group stage (16 teams).
    • £8.976 (US$12m) million – To each team eliminated in the second round of 16 (8 teams).
    • £11.068 (US$16m) million – To each team eliminated in the quarter-finals. (4 teams).
    • £16.456 (US$22m) million – Fourth placed team.
    • £17.952 (US$24m) million – Third placed team.
